All'inizio del secolo ventesimo, negli USA, oltre al Fox Trot, Ragtime ecc. e prima che il Jazz sconvolgesse tutto il mondo della musica sincopata con la sua inarrestabile rivoluzione, sono da annoverare le cosiddette "Novelettes". In molti "songs" questi vari generi musicali - tutti accomunati da spiccato e vivace senso del ritmo, acciaccature, sìncopi, spostamento di accenti e tendenza ad introdurre improvvisazioni - si fusero con ottimi risultati.

Le Novelettes furono più o meno elaborate, ma tutte gradevolissime all'ascolto. Precedettero di poco l'invenzione dell'armonica cromatica, che, ai suoi esordi, ovviamente non poteva che "inventare" a poco a poco la sua tecnica e le sue possibilità. Un campo di applicazione dell'armonica cromatica furono appunto le Novelettes, la cui esecuzione si rivelò ottima e gradevolissima.

Il senso ritmico si discostava completamente dal classico ed europeo stile melodizzante. L'Europa gradì, tuttavia, questo nuovo genere di "sound" americano, che spesso contribuì anche al mutamento delle obsolete regole della danza.

In questo CD Stan Harper, rivelatosi precoce e valente armonicista, contribuisce alla fama di varie Novelettes, quali Nola, Ragging the Scale, Canadian Capens, The Easy Winners (composti prima della sua nascita), nonchè di Doll Dance (nella cui seconda parte domina il Jazz), Kitten on the keys, Flapperettes, Dizzi Fingers, Polly, Eccentricity, Finesse, etc. (composti quando dell'armonica cromatica si ignoravano tecnica, futuro ed eventuale successo). Il pubblico tributò un inequivocabile successo tanto al genere musicale quanto allo strumento.

Stan Harper fu uno degli esecutori ed interpreti migliori, e la sua fama si diffuse in tutta l'America, per varie generazioni. Pur non trovandosi incisi i suoi eccellenti brani, per fortuna Stan registrò qualche nastro professionale, rimasti inediti fino a quando la casa discografica EUCLED lo convinse a trasferirli in CD.

Si evitò così la perdita di capolavori musicali, sia sotto il profilo artistico sia sotto il profilo tecnico, considerando che non molti esecutori di armonica cromatica, in tutti questi lunghi anni, possono qualificarsi dei veri artisti come Stan Harper. L'ascolto delle sue Novelettes è una delizia per l'ascoltatore ed una impareggiabile lezione per il dilettante o professionista dell'armonica cromatica.

In the U.S.A. in the early 20^th century, Fox Trot, Ragtime, etc. were supreme. And the Jazz Revolution would soon change the entire world of syncopated music. That was the very moment when the “Novelettes”, so called, stepped onto the stage. Their songs merged and united all these different types of music. Rhythm was king: syncope, shifting accents, improvisation, acciaccaturas; all with excellent results. Next, along with this new music came a new musical instrument. The chromatic harmonica was in its infancy, exploring techniques…searching for its niche. The confluence of the Novelettes - plus the new harmonica - proved to be a perfect match! A novel beat, born in America, was branching off from the classical melodic style found in Europe. But the new sound would eventually be embraced by Europe as well; leading to an evolution in social dancing.

On this CD, Stan Harper shows his youthful mastery of the harmonica, while popularizing tunes from the Novelettes: “Nola”, “Ragging the Scale”, “Canadian Capers”, The Easy Winners. Jazz dominates other songs such as “Doll Dance”; He plays “Kitten on the Keys”, “Flapperettes,” “Dizzy Fingers”, “Polly”, “Eccentricity”, and “Finesse.” These latter tunes had been written before chromatic harmonica technique had fully evolved. But this new music and the new instrument would receive national acclaim. Stan Harper’s fame spread throughout America. Harper was one of the best harmonica players; one of the best performers of the new sound, for several generations.

Stan Harper’s professional tapes remained unpublished, however, until he signed an agreement with EUCLED Record Company. Fortunately his tapes were then transferred to CD format, saving these musical masterpieces for posterity. Stan Harper stands out among chromatic harmonica players. As a performer and as a technician, he truly has achieved artistic greatness. Listening to his version of the Novelettes provides a unique lesson to either an amateur or a professional chromatic harmonica player. And for listeners everywhere, Harper’s music is delightful entertainment.
